Roll Spirit Roll

There are a lot of big names getting thrown around when music journalists talk about The Duke Spirit. The Velvet Underground, PJ Harvey, Mazzy Star, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc, etc. (Have you figured out that they have a female singer yet?) Anyway, all these are valid comparisons, but as I was listening to the album for the first time today, I kept thinking: “Oh, so this is what Primal Scream would sound like if Bobby was a girl!” It’s maybe not the most obvious parallel, and The Duke Spirit are a lot less techno-oriented than the Scream have been of late, but the bass / guitar combo is just deadly, and the only other guys I’ve heard lay it down like that are Mani and Kevin Shields. So give it a listen and see what you think. The album isn’t out in the US for now, but I’ve got a feeling we’ll be hearing more from these kids. And I don’t mean a postcard.

The Duke Spirit – Dark is Light Enough [MP3]

I tried my best to quickly put it on viiiiiiibraaate!

OMG! R. Kelly has gone full-goose bozo, I think. Seriously. Maybe he’s trying to pick up the slack for Dave Chapelle or something, because nobody even needs to bother making a joke version of his new track. It’s already beyond the realms of even Dave’s comic abilities! Seriously though, listen to this:

R. Kelly – Trapped in the Closet, Parts I-II [MP3]

Parts III-V are due out later this summer, assuming there are no interruptions to Kelly’s crazy pills supply. Awesome!

Great Band Names #9

Well, maybe this one is more of a great *song* name, I can’t decide. Anyhow, it turns out there are some pretty amusing entries in Google’s USENET archives from summer 1983 about Ep. VI of everyone’s favorite sci-fi soap opera. Just remember, no matter how big of a Star Wars nerd you are, you have nothing on the authors of these posts. They outclass everyone by several orders of magnitude. They were discussing Star Wars, on the internet, in 19-fuck-83! Oh, and about that great band/song name? It’s:

Darth Vader’s Body (Spoiler)

Why is Japan so coooool?!

Well for starters, I’d say the farty-sounding bassline that works it’s way through the music on this site [WARNING: annoying music with farty-sounding bassline!] is pretty damn coooool! (But then again, I kind of like things that are lame. And plus, I’m sure it was composed by some Nathan Barley-type in London). Anyway, as the “manga” points out, the coooooolest thing about Japan is that it is a land where “even tiny street signs are designed with love and attention.” Which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for any of the flash-trash put out by these fcuk-ing idiots. However they are right about one thing: “It’s the hair that really gives the manga hero his style!”

Prenatal Castration

So I was just reading this interview with James’ Tim Booth and when asked for his favorite book he replies:

My favorite book, today, is the Philip Pullman trilogy, His Dark Material. These are 3 fantasy books, originally written for teenagers, but they turned into something quite amazing, as the theme becomes two children’s journey to try and kill god. Better than Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter.

Trying to kill God has always been a hobby of mine, so I decided to check out the books on Amazon. The reviews were pretty predictably split between, “These are among the best books ever!” and “You’re all going to burn in hell!” Then I noticed in one of the reviews that a movie was (allegedly) in the works, and so I hopped on over to IMDB to see what I could find out about that. The info is pretty slim at this point, but the one thing that we do know about the upcoming film version is that New Line and writer Chris Weitz were recently in the news for a horrifying display of disrespect and dicklessness with regards to the movie’s screenplay. Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to read the books then. No harm in that! =)

Oh God! You Devil

Les Claypool once said “I’ve been to hell, I spell it… I spell it DMV.” And it seems like even our Lord and Savior himself is not above the Devil’s cruel machinations. Hopefully things will eventually get sorted out and this guy will get what’s coming to him (with an awesome, RFID prize inside if he waits long enough!) But one thing is for damn sure. He’s never going to stop getting Spanish telemarketing calls.

We Invented The Remix

Everybody loves the RedEye post so much I put together an alternate universe version of the quote. And just for some context, I left in one of the other respondents.

Look out… It’s an Osprey!

This shirt is pretty friggin’ sweet. But how come they don’t have any based on Odell Lake?

The Nouvelle Hotness

Bossa Nova covers of David Bowie songs… Bossa Nova covers of New Wave classics (and which, yes we’re aware of the irony). What’s next, Bossa Nova covers of Contemporary Christian rock? Anyway, trendiness aside, the aforementioned Bossa/80’s fusion by France’s Nouvelle Vague is so, so good. Joy Division, Depeche Mode, The Clash, The Cure, XTC, even Madonna! They’re all here, given the full-on breathy vocal, nylon string and vibes treatment. This has been out for awhile overseas, but David Byrne’s Luaka Bop has just seen fit to drop it on our heathen shores this week, and you can pick it up for non-import prices over at Amazon. Here’s an appetizer:
