Neverending Math Equation

Kara got me a gift subscription to Paste Magazine recently and while I haven’t even received the first issue in the mail yet, I’m already enjoying some music I found out about in a back issue on their website. According to the “Paste College Select” radio album airplay chart, the latest album from former Red House Painter Mark Kozelek’s new band (Sun Kil Moon) was the #6 album last month, but I hadn’t heard about it until I read this article. (This probably just goes to show that I am not listening to enough WOXY.com lately!)

Anyway, what’s cool about this new Sun Kil Moon Album (which is called Tiny Cities, by the way) is that it is comprised entirely of Modest Mouse covers. Mark Kozelek has pulled this kind of stunt before with his 2001 album of AC/DC covers, What’s Next to the Moon. This time the re-workings are maybe not quite so far removed from the originals, but the results are still pretty awesome. I was unfamiliar with quite a few of the songs Kozelek chose to work with, but after hearing these versions, I’m looking forward to checking out the originals as well.

Here’s one track that many people will recognize:

Sun Kil Moon - Ocean Breathes Salty

For reference, I’m also providing:

Mark Kozelek - Bad Boy Boogie

and the original version:
