From CNN:
Authorities have arrested two men in connection with electronic light boards depicting a middle-finger-waving moon man that triggered repeated bomb scares around Boston on Wednesday and prompted the closure of bridges and a stretch of the Charles River…Peter Berdovsky, 27, a freelance video artist from Arlington, Massachusetts, and Sean Stevens, 28, were facing charges of placing a hoax device in a way that results in panic, as well as one count of disorderly conduct, said Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley. The hoax charge is a felony, she said. Both men were arrested Wednesday evening.
I’m amused by the super-specific wording of that first charge. It seems like the kind of thing you make up after the fact when you can’t fit the “undesirable behavior” into an existing framework. I was kind of operating under the impression that this sort of thing wasn’t permitted by our constitution, but I suppose at this point it’s purely academic. At any rate, if it is cool to just go around making up whatever laws you want now, why not make the bogus charges even *more* specific. In this case, I’d suggest something along the lines of, “Exposing structural flaws in National Security protocol” or “Causing undue distress and embarrassment to ranking government officials.” The great thing about that second one is that it’s likely to come up more and more frequently over the next several years, so signing it into law now would save everyone lots of time and trouble later on.
Turner Broadcasting clearly has a lot to answer to here as well. The parent company of Cartoon Network may not have been directly, or even indirectly responsible for the massive traffic cluster-fuck that resulted from the ATHF scare, but as the largest and most visible party in the proceedings, it is their duty and responsibility to respond insipidly to any buck-passing and finger-pointing deemed necessary by the dramaturges of Boston’s security theatre. For example, in response to the following statement from mayor Thomas Menino:
I just think this is outrageous, what they’ve done … It’s all about corporate greed.
Turner Broadcasting should agree to the indecency of their act, perhaps even going so far as to admit that their actions were not only outrageous, but in fact “truly, truly, truly outrageous.”
In other news, the energon ration will be reduced from thirty cubes to twenty this week.
